The collection includes works created by artists from across the Levant, North Africa, West Africa and the Arabian Peninsula; it was compiled by the Boateng  and Mensah family in the 1950s. In 2015, Jesse Yaw, took on the commission of safeguarding the collection and expanding it,  founding BAF in February 2015.

Today BAF’s mission encompasses preservation, documentation, archiving, publication, research, exhibitions, and cultural events, all aimed at making African, Asian, Arab art accessible to both local and international audiences. BAF’s extensive database and research capabilities provide vital resources for researchers and students, facilitating deeper exploration into African and Arab art’s history and evolution.

BAF has been a steadfast supporter of international cultural and art exhibitions, notably supporting and contributing to the first African museum in the Asian pacific. BAF’s extensive support, including financial contribution and loaning of seminal artworks, has been crucial to these events.
